On the evening of April 21, 2013, in Hanoi, the Vietnam Software and IT Services Association (Vinasa) held the Sao Khue 2013 Award Ceremony for 68 outstanding IT products, solutions, and services, including the Classbook electronic textbook solution researched and developed by the Educational Electronic Book Joint Stock Company (EDC), a member of the Vietnam Education Publishing House. The National Selection Council also decided to award this solution a 4-star rating for superior software products. Previously, in November 2012, Classbook had also received the Vietnam Talent Award for promising products.
Belonging to the group of new software products and solutions from Vietnam participating in the Sao Khue Award, the Classbook electronic textbook (www.classbook.vn) is a specialized and modern educational device designed to better serve the teaching and learning needs of teachers and students in general education.
The device has powerful hardware configuration, built not only to suit the functionality of a learning device but also to provide users with the best experience during use. Classbook features an 8-inch multi-touch color screen using anti-glare IPS technology, with a 4:3 aspect ratio and 1024×768 pixel resolution, ensuring a reading experience equivalent to traditional paper books. The device has a battery capacity sufficient for 10-12 hours of continuous reading, suitable for all levels of general education, whether students attend half-day or full-day school. The device uses the open-source Android operating system with a proprietary data security mechanism.
Classbook comes pre-loaded with a full set of over 300 textbooks and workbooks from grades 1 to 12 by the Vietnam Education Publishing House, and more than 20 supplementary learning applications for various subjects. Users can also access the Classbook Store via the Internet, an online repository of reference books, lectures, and rich applications to update content on their devices.
The Classbook device and the Classbook Store form an ecosystem where content for learning and teaching is built, selected, distributed, and exploited according to each individual's needs. The core content on Classbook is the fully and faithfully digitized system of textbooks, supplementary books, teacher's books, and reference books from the Vietnam Education Publishing House.
In addition, Classbook provides superior features of electronic books, allowing users to interact with book content or access expanded data sources related to lessons in the form of audio, images, or videos depending on the nature of each subject.
Practical pilot deployment at nearly 20 primary and secondary schools in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Hai Phong has recorded initial successes of Classbook. At the same time, professional and content contributions from the Textbook Editorial Board, lecturers from the University of Languages and International Studies – Vietnam National University, Hanoi, and staff from the Vietnam Institute of Educational Sciences have helped refine the features and development direction of the product.
